A gazelle that sought al-Ghuwayr’s wormwood and its cave
A gazelle crossed the valley of Ghawir
is a ransom for a skittish gazelle in al-Ghuwayr.
I would ransom that gazelle wandering in Ghawir

And they said, “Compose love verse about him.” I said, “A little gazelle
They said, "Write poetry about him," I said, "My poem
of humankind, with the neck and turning glance of gazelles.”
Is about the intimacy in his beautiful neck and hand

ترصدُ عيني قانص بزرودِ
He breathed in a breeze from Zarud and took fright
The wind blows from his flowers' buttons
at a hunter’s watchful eyes in Zarud.
My eyes covetously watch his flowers

He turns away whenever he hears a faint sound at the water,
His ear blocks out any news he senses among the roses
his heart burning with thirst, for fear of one lying in wait.
A mounted scout, his heart fears the watch of the hunter

Peerless, he appeared like the full moon in his beauty’s mansion;
Fareed appeared like the full moon in the mansion of his beauty
and none but heaven’s full moon is peerless.
And none but the moon in the sky is like Fareed

تدبج ورد من حيا بخدود
If shyness before his lover came over him,
If shyness confronted him about his love
roses of modesty would be embroidered on his cheeks.
He would don rose garlands on his cheeks

And he appears before the yearning heart, turning away,
And he shows the ardent heart a sight
with white cheeks beneath black curls.
Of white cheeks below black curly hair

لما بيَ أمشي راسفاً بقيود
I rise and fall in my passion for him, as though I
I stand and plunge into his love as if
walked in my affliction, shuffling in chains.
When I sober up I walk in chains

Many, if counted, are his troops against me;
Many, if they counted his soldiers against me
few, if counted, are my troops against him.
Few, if they counted my soldiers against him

أقول لأسراب المدامع جودي
Whenever a miser’s nature reveals itself in him,
If the wine of his inclination flows freely
I tell the flocks of tears, “Be generous!”
I say to the swarms of tears, “Flow!”

وهي كف ذا والقلب غير حديد
For even if my heart were iron, through love of him
If my heart were iron in love for him
it would weaken. Stop this—the heart is not iron.
While he has a hand other than iron

O brother of the full moon, love has weakened me with its fierceness;
O brother of the moon, love has humiliated me intensely
and were it not for you, love would not be harsh.
And were it not for you, love would not be so intense
