انقضى العمر بهم وكدر

انقضى العمر بهم وكدر

والفتى رهن قضاء وقدر

Life has passed in sorrow and distress.

And the young man is hostage to decree and destiny.

فالكثير الجمُّ منه قد قضى

فالكثير الجمُّ منه قد قضى

والذي باقٍ سيمضي بالأثر

والذي باقٍ سيمضي بالأثر

So the vast bulk of it has already passed.

And what remains will pass in its wake.

إنما المرء قيل لبثه

إنما المرء قيل لبثه

والقليل النزر لبثاً لايسر

والقليل النزر لبثاً لايسر

A man's stay is but brief.

And a short, scant stay brings no joy.

قد عصينا ورجونا غافرا

قد عصينا ورجونا غافرا

أن يشأ عذَّب أو شاء غفر

أن يشأ عذَّب أو شاء غفر

We have disobeyed and hoped for One who forgives.

If He wills, He punishes; or, if He wills, He forgives.

غرَّنا جود كَريم واهب

غرَّنا جود كَريم واهب

فادَّخرناه ونعم المدخر

فادَّخرناه ونعم المدخر

The bounty of a generous Giver has beguiled us.

So we have kept Him in reserve—what an excellent reserve!
