فأنشر ما تطوي عليه الضمائر
I disclose the tale of love between me and her,
I pour out words of love between us
And spread abroad what hearts keep folded within.
And reveal what consciences conceal

She shows you a face whose radiance shames the sun;
You see a shining moon ashamed of sunrise
Around its light her tresses have come to hover.
The planets orbit its glowing light

And from afar she turns an eye toward me,
And from afar yearn towards me with glances
Whose tale is told by keen-edged, cleaving swords.
That set astir the keenest sentiments

And sometimes, on a night journey, she starts in apprehension,
At times you start, fearing intimacy’s unease
As a skittish gazelle from Tihama takes fright.
As a gazelle startled by a hissing snake

Clustered flocks set out early like sandgrouse,
Clusters of troops that rise early like wildcats
Then early-rising hawks snatch them away from us.
Seizing them from us, the early risers

Equals of the moons of heaven when they appear,
Peerless moons when they appear in the sky
Yet the moons of heaven have no equals.
For the moons in the sky have no equals

Budding maidens, the eggs of their breasts intact,
Beauties with the white breasts of gazelles
Save that their eyelids droop.
Except their eyelids veil them

Light where the sash runs when they walk,
Lightweight when the wrap clads their walk
Heavy where the waistcloths wrap around them.
Heavy, not needing sashes’ support

Slender at the waist, yet full-bodied,
Slender, not thin between puberty and plump
Languid in the turn of their eyes, yet powerful.
Delicate, turned back but well-prepared

We are afflicted against our will by what afflicts the eyes;
Softened like chiselled marble perforce
For from afar comes the harm the eyes inflict on us.
So after the chisels test us no more

When they stretch their necks, they are called wild-cow calves,
If the steeds raced, they’d say, halt your zeal
Reaching upward—but how can wild-cow calves compare with them?
Champing but where are the bridle-rings?

And if a silver anklet rings upon her shins,
If the delicate anklet were to ring in the market
The pure-gold bracelets on her hands answer it.
A vigilant guardian would hide it in his grip

Wonders of beauty, among whom there is a pact
Wonders of beauty contracted among them
To forsake me—tender maidens, all guileless.
On estrangement, all tending to estrange

Indeed, by Mina, the Corner, and the House of purity,
By my vow, and your vow, and Safa’s hill
And by the noblest that al-Safa and the sacred sites embrace,
And the most hallowed shrine and its precincts

Indeed, from her, in anger and contentment alike, I find palatable
You have let me taste, in consent or ire
Separation's deadly poison, which tears throats apart.
A drought still fresh enough to sear the throat
