Neither earnestness nor jest benefits a man,
A man gains naught from toil or jest,
if fortune falters—not even unalloyed glory.
If he toils overly, no glory manifest.

Do not think anything can come to pass
Think not that fate will bring to thee,
other than what allotted fate brings.
Aught save what is ordained inevitably.

Do not blame time; blame its people.
Blame not fate, but blame its people,
No blame lies on time when it withholds.
Fate is flawless, it has spread its wings.

للفتىfor the young man يوماًone day ويوماًand another day مستراحa respite
A young man's life is but weariness,
A youth's life is full of weariness,
for him one day, and on another, respite.
The youth rests awhile, then restlessness.

What ails my people? May no downpour of rain water them!
Why do my people not incline towards life?
Indeed, I knew them as a free, unruled tribe.
My pact with them is to meet and unite.

And when their sweet fragrance wafted,
When the aroma of their perfume spreads,
I said, 'Darin perfumers, fragrant with ambergris!'
I say, they are the Darine scented with ambergris.

I became a drink for them, sweet to taste;
I have become sweet drinking for them,
it is like water—or pure, unmixed water.
Like water or water from the rain.
