Departure has grown urgent among the companions—may it never do so!

And the beloved, the dear friend, has gone far away—may he never do so!

O my two friends, the north wind is a messenger

From me to you—or the east wind and the Qabūl breeze.

My night has lengthened because of you both; enough for me

That my short night is long in loving you.

If you two turn away or grow weary, I

Have not turned from you two; another, not I, is the one who tires.

Or if a state should change, I have

A state that never turns away from loving you.

An inborn state was founded on love for you—

It is my longing and my inborn tears.

They tossed my terrified heart about and said,

'Fickle, changeable!'—yet there is no change.

    وادّعى لائم ولام عذول

    A spiteful foe has spread slander, and a tale-bearer has rebuked;

A blamer has made accusations, and a reproacher has blamed.

I have a heartache for them that torments me with longing,

And deadly love, and streaming tears,

And infatuation, amorous yearning, and consuming passion,

And sighing, plaintive cries, and wailing.

O beautiful one, hostile to kindness—yet

Whatever the beautiful one does is beautiful.

I complain to you of some of the heat of burning thirst,

Which my breast could not contain; all of me is burning thirst.

    علّ يجدي بكم لي التعليل

    Give us hope of your nearness, and keep putting us off;

Perhaps, through you, such consolation will help me.

They journeyed through the lands over rugged ground; and those

Are rough tracts and plains traversed without a path.

If the laden caravan has sped lightly away, I have

A heavy burden of love arising from passion.

Whenever the riding camels veered off with my companions,

I cried, 'Turn aside, for my ribs are bent with longing!'

A swift trot, a swift trot—one way or another!

Since the march has balked, then an easy trot, an easy trot!

    هذه دارهم وهذي الطلول

    And you two, stop with me at the dwellings for a moment;

This is their home, and these are the ruins.

I have a question about the dwellings, and an inquiry,

On a day with many a questioner, and none to be questioned.

Standing, I seek the messenger in bewilderment:

Is there a guide? And where is the guide for me?
