For you I traversed the plains, lengthwise and breadthwise,
In you I found the plains, long and wide
And forced my way over rugged ground, stumbling and rising.
And saddened the grieved, much and some

How often I keep pace with your passion, in haste and slowly,
How much did I run within you, spurring and inheriting
And humor your desire, leaping up and crouching.
And circling your love, leaping and crouching

Love and I find in you release and constraint;
For me and for love in you is giving and withholding
I cannot withstand you, in release or constraint.
I cannot withstand your giving and withholding

What tears have poured in torrents for you,
What tear has overflowed weeping over you
And what a heart has laid its yearning bare to you!
And my conscience to you with passion poured out

My sorrow—or shall I suck your saliva?
Shall I gather or wipe your flowing tears
My ruin—or shall I bite your cheek?
Kiss or bite your cheek, a bite

The lips never tire of mentioning you as their litany,
Do not tire lips of mentioning you, ever
Nor does the heart tire of remembering you as its obligation.
Or tire the conscience of remembering you, duty

Do you think my heart can bear being patient
Can my heart endure patience
Without you, or that my eye can taste sleep?
From you or my eyes taste closing

ماnot عهدتI have known اللحاظthe glances تقتلkill مرضىwhile sick
Your glances have killed me, though sickly;
Your glances killed me, sickening
I never knew glances could kill while sick.
I never knew glances could kill the sick

So sheathe the sword and draw your dark glance,
So bare the sword and ready the glance, I yearn
For it is the sword unsheathed from your glances.
For it is the sword from your glance that is bared

I would ransom with myself a beloved pleased only by my displeasure;
In me a lover who was not pleased but with my discontent
Would that he angered the lover—and brought contentment.
If only he would displease the lover and satisfy

No disgrace rests upon the old man, now that
No disgrace remains on the old man after
Life has hurried, running toward death.
Life has rushed to death, racing

Gray hair has veiled his head in whiteness;
Old age satisfied its head with whiteness
It is sharper upon his head than the edge of a keen sword.
It in the head is whiter than white branches

Do you think I shall be compensated for a whiteness
Do you see me compensated for whiteness
Utterly pure, that has spread admonition through my hair's partings?
That weeps having threaded the parting, preaching
