Borujerd, O driver of the riding camels—Borujerd!
Brujerd, O guide of riders to Brujerd,
For nowhere else will you find a life of ease.
You see not life there soft and gentle lived.

I urged the pale camels toward it in haste, with a resolve
I spurred my steed and made resolve to fare
That lends an edge to the keenness of an unsheathed sword.
Where swords as harvesting hooks gleam, sharpened, bared.

I rode toward it, and you would think the stars—
I rode there while the stars watched from on high,
When a stretch of darkness lifted—were inflamed eyes.
As darkness blinked awake a sleepy eye.

أروم بمسرى العيش رامة أو نجدا
And I set out traversing the deserts in longing, as though
And I roamed the waste, yearning as though I
I sought, through life's night journey, Ramah or Najd.
Might find, adventuring, a life of ease.

ومرهفة قضباً وملمومةً جردا
And I took along nothing but leveled lances,
No comrades had I but some lances keen,
And keen-edged blades, and well-knit, sleek steeds.
A polished blade, a stripped spear smooth and clean,

And the man of sound judgment is he who takes only a sharp sword,
For he who wisdom claims, unwise is he
A cleaving blade, keen of edge; he takes no scabbard.
If, armed with cutting sword, he scabbards it idly.

You see him, when war has cast aside her veil
Yet when war lets her veil fall from her face,
And bared her shin, as a tawny lion.
A lioness, with flowers at her waist.
