تهادت بين رامة والغميم
فتاةٌa maiden ترتميshoots بلحاظwith the glances of ريمa gazelle
فتاةٌ ترتمي بلحاظ ريم
She swayed gracefully between Rāmah and al-Ghamīm,
She swayed between the thundercloud and the mist
A maiden shooting with a gazelle's glances.
A girl falling into a flimsy veil
تنافرshe shies away غيرwithout صارمةsevering وداديmy affection
تنافر غير صارمة ودادي
وذلكand that شأنthe way of غزلانthe gazelles of الصريمthe sandy tract
وذلك شأن غزلان الصريم
She shies away without severing my bond of affection,
My affection for her is tender, not harsh
And such is the way of the gazelles of the dunes.
Such is the way of graceful gazelles
يميسsways بهاwith her الصباyouth فيميسthen it sways تيهاًin pride
يميس بها الصبا فيميس تيهاً
كخوطlike a slender shoot of البانthe bān (moringa) tree مالbent معwith النسيمthe breeze
كخوط البان مال مع النسيم
Youth sways with her, then sways in pride,
The morning breeze blows her this way and that
Like a bān-tree shoot that bent with the breeze.
Like strands of rope swinging in the wind
عذيريmy excuse منfor مهاةthe female oryx of الخدرthe secluded chamber خالa mole
عذيري من مهاة الخدر خال
تبوّأَsettled عارضthe side of الخدِّthe cheek الوسيمlovely
تبوّأَ عارض الخدِّ الوسيم
My excuse for loving the chamber's oryx is a mole
The beauty mark on her cheek is my excuse
That has settled on the side of her lovely cheek.
Adorning her handsome, radiant face
تغازلنيshe flirts with me وطرفand the eye of النجمthe star ساهٍheedless
تغازلني وطرف النجم ساهٍ
وجنحand the wing of الليلnight معتكرdeeply dark الاديمin skin
وجنح الليل معتكر الاديم
She flirts with me while the star's eye is heedless,
She flirts with me as the stars grow dim
And the wing of night is dark of skin.
And the darkness of night spreads its wings
تعاطينيshe passes me المدامthe wine وماand how احيلىvery sweet
تعاطيني المدام وما احيلى
مُعاطاةthe passing of المدامwine منfrom النديمthe drinking companion
مُعاطاة المدام من النديم
She passes me the wine—and how sweet
She offers me wine, and how delightful
Is wine passed by a drinking companion!
Is the offering of wine from a companion
اذاwhen افترَّتparted in a smile مباسمهاher smiling lips وفاهتand she spoke
اذا افترَّت مباسمها وفاهت
بنغمةwith a tone of منطقspeech الصوتthe voice الرخيمsoft and melodious
بنغمة منطق الصوت الرخيم
When her lips part in a smile and she speaks
When her smile widens and her lips part
With speech in the tones of a soft, melodious voice,
With the melody of a gentle voice
فملءthen a filling السمعof hearing منwith درّpearls نثيرٍscattered
فملء السمع من درّ نثيرٍ
وملءand a filling العينof the eye منwith درٍّpearls نظيمstrung together
وملء العين من درٍّ نظيم
Then the ear is filled with scattered pearls,
Filling my hearing with ample pearls
And the eye is filled with strung pearls.
And filling my sight with strung gems
