أبداًalways حفظتُI preserved لهfor him الوداداaffection
Who will tell al-Jawad on my behalf:
I am a messenger about my generous one
I have always preserved my affection for him.
I have always kept affection for him
عهدٌa pledge لهto him بينwithin الحشاthe innermost breast
أودعتهُI entrusted him منيfrom me الفؤاداthe heart
A pledge to him lies deep within my breast;
My covenant with him among the bushes
I entrusted him with my own heart.
I have entrusted him with my heart

داdark core (completion) منهof it والعينand the eye السواداthe black pupil
I lodged him in the heart's dark
I settled him in the healthy heart
core, and in the eye's black pupil.
Always with him and the black eye
أترىdo you think تجنبتُI forsook الوفاءfidelity
إذاًthen تجنبتُI forsook الرشاداright guidance
Do you think I have forsaken fidelity?
Do you think I have avoided loyalty
Then I have forsaken the right path.
If so I have avoided righteousness
أرعىI cherish الأخاthe brother متعهداًwith constant care
كتعهدlike the tending of الروضthe meadow العهاداrecurring rains
I tend my brother with constant care,
I watch over the brother pledged
as a meadow cherishes recurring rains.
As the pledge of the blossoming meadow

Can my abasement be justified by raising that
Is it proper for me to lower this one
singular proper name in the vocative?
Like the singular flag the caller
يامُلبسO you who clothe القلبthe heart الخفوقfluttering

O you who clothe the heart in fluttering,
O you who dresses the throbbing heart
and rob the eye of sleep:
And undresses the sleepy eye
كمhow many صادقa sincere lover خلعcast off الرقادsleep
ومدَّعand a pretender خلعcast off السهاداsleeplessness
how many a true lover has cast off sleep,
How truthful is one who takes off drowsiness
and a pretender has cast off sleeplessness!
And pretender who takes off vigilance

If I have ever asked you for forgetfulness,
If your trait is solace
then spread the dust as a bed for me.
Then comfort is what I spread as a mattress

No mind forgets, while the steeds of yearning
No thought consoles me and the horses of passion expand it hunting
pursue it relentlessly.

My yearning has reached you in anger,
Trampling the plains and mountains
treading the hills and the hollows.
A longing I sent folded

A yearning I sent forth twofold;
So send it back to me scattered
so send it back to me singly.
Lest enduring love diminish

If you diminish this longstanding love,
The more it diminishes the more it increases
for whenever you lessen it, it grows.
Love is nothing but help

Love is nothing but courage,
No use tears that have flowed
not a tear that wets a sword-belt.

Oh, may a spring cloud water your dwelling,
If it was stingy towards rain it gave generously
pouring freely if rain begrudges its downpour,

Flash a guide and make the camels race
like a driver of camels bound for water.

They loosed its two great buckets, as
The auctions that released the bidders
they loosed the water-skins in the wilderness.

You parted—oh, may the hand be severed
When the pillars of glory wavered
that rattled the tent-poles for departure!

I watch over you, while the eye refuses
To taste sleep as provision
to taste sleep as nourishment.

Oh, may God terrify separation,
And O one who watched over those lands
and oh, may He protect those lands.
