ألا قل لندب حوى المكرمات

وفوق عروش الفخار استوى

Listen: say to the noble man who possessed noble virtues,

And took his seat above the thrones of glory:

محمد علي العلي المقام

عميد النظام أمير اللوا

Muḥammad ʿAlī, exalted in rank,

Chief of the army, commander of the banner—

حثثت ركاب السرى في المسير

مجداً بحيث يشاء الهوى

You urged the mounts of night travel onward,

Hastening wherever longing wills.

فوافيت مشهد قدسٍ به

أمام الأنام على ثوى

So you reached a holy shrine, where

The imam of humankind, ʿAlī, lay at rest.

فنلت لدى رمسه ما نويت

وللمرء من عمل ما نوى

So at his grave you attained what you intended,

And each person receives from a deed what he intended.

فداو الجوى بثراه فذاك

لداء الجرائم نعم الدوا

So heal your heartache with his soil, for that

Is an excellent remedy for the sickness of sins.

ونعليك فاخلع بأعتابه

فإنك منها أدي طوى

And take off your sandals at his thresholds,

For there you are [in the valley of] Ṭuwā.

حوى عظم الأجر تأريخه

فأرخ لأعظم أجر حوى

Its chronogram contains the greatness of the reward;

So compose a chronogram for the greatest reward he gained.
