It is parting: it has left the bow no room for another draw,

Nor left the captive any refuge from anguish.

On the morning when Muhsin, companion of kindness and virtue,

Ally of eminence and glory, unwillingly resolved to depart.

He intended to leave, while anguish remained; and now

My fortitude became his escort on departure's day.

And I have a liver that separation has wasted since he left,

And a heart that sorrow wore away until it broke apart,

And a tormented sufferer's entrails, melted

By parting's burning grief, then pouring from the eye as tears.

No wonder I spent the night a sworn ally of gloom,

A brother of sorrows, pale in body and in pain.

For I was forcibly stripped of patience; now

Anguish is mine, not what any claimant claims.

So, O departing one, may no harm touch you; I

Never cease, at your loss, to be wasted and dismayed.

And O you who left—not from weariness, far be that from you—

And lodged heartache's fire within us on the day of farewell,

We knew that glory had struck camp, and sorrow

Had increased, and kindness lay neglected.

When your radiant qualities called to me—those that

Rose above the stars of the spheres in radiance and station—

I groaned in anguish and came, through a grief

That saps strength, to fold my ribs over the embers.

Even if calamities have battled you, and

The dwellings of excellence became wasteland the day you resolved to leave,

Yet how often you overcame calamities, and how often

Through your bounty the garden of virtue and generosity grew lush!

And though you remain a captive, hidden in the dust,

A stranger, while learning's fellowship becomes scattered,

How often you were companionship and joy to the days,

And a dwelling and gathering place for virtue and piety.

O peerless man of the age, and son of its chief,

And noblest champion sprung from Lu'ayy,

You strove to win high honors and attain them,

And, praise be to God, you were the noblest of those who strove.

May goodness be yours! Is there a return to cool the heart

And quench a blaze lodged between my sides?

How often you lavished the fellowship that befits you,

And made fidelity alone your broad road.

May a cloud's unceasing rain water your bygone days,

Refusing to disperse for as long as days endure.
