To you, a sigh from a lover who has not forgotten

your bond despite separation, nor come to hate you.

And here is a heart’s ember, which has drawn

flames from the coals within a tormented lover’s entrails.

My loved ones, I did not leave your abode

to take anyone among mankind in your stead.

Never! Nor did I choose anything but the sanctuary—

no, by the sanctuary and its dwellers—as my dwelling.

And by al-Rida—no, by al-Rida! I never sought

to leave a dwelling where al-Rida had settled.

What flung me away from your land was only

an ordeal that made me drink bitterness—spurge and colocynth.

It drove me to the farthest mountain; yet part of

my nature is to have no love for the mountain.

And here I fold my ribs around

a fire of longing whose furnace none can warm themselves beside.

And I shed tears upon the face of the earth,

    pouring, streaming, flowing freely.

And how can they quench the burning thirsts of the lover who

has become bound in the fetters of separation?

O neighbors of the resting place whose precincts

are a stronghold of the choicest among the noblest and most honorable!

If my home is far from you, you

will always remain guests between my ribs.

Or if my body is distant from you, my soul

is with you, seeking no change away from you.

And if I have ever preferred another company

over you, may I never know true merit.

And if I have hobbled anywhere but in your sanctuary

my mounts, I am not among those with reason.

Shall I dwell in al-Sham, while those I have pledged myself to

are in exalted Najaf and the Taff of Karbala?

Shall I accept, after giving them my allegiance,

distance? Then I have lied in claiming loyalty.

Ah, what an ordeal, through which I have become

    distracted in mind, sorrowful, afflicted!

And what a calamity, compelling me

to repeat, ‘There is no power, nor...’

Such is my state; though I am denied my hopes,

charged with bearing the heavy burdens of suffering,

I have consoling examples, whatever sorrow befalls me,

in the Creator’s chosen ones among this multitude:

my Imams, my masters, and my guides

to salvation, at the last as at the first.

For they, they alone and no others, drank

a cup of the days’ anguish that was never sweet.

And they bore from their age what could not

be borne by the lofty crags of the wilderness.

They never took lodging in a dwelling

without its becoming a dwelling for calamities.

And this world closed in on them, so they cannot

see any escape from the oppression within it.

Yes, they were driven from their home,

and lodged in an abode of anguish and affliction.

So immense were their calamities that, until the Resurrection,

the people of earth will make a byword of them.

How much of their pure, inviolable blood

was deemed lawful to shed in Muharram!

I had been content, while dwelling near them,

with lowliness, aloof from the elevation of others.

Then what of me, when I see that nearness to them

has placed me at the loftiest reaches of exaltation?

And Amil, though my fortune there has risen,

I deem it an agent of lowering, like the genitive-governing ‘ʿalā’ (‘upon’).
