حلّيتyou adorned جيداًa neck عاطلاًbare عنof درّهits pearls
حلّيت جيداً عاطلاً عن درّه
بمدائحwith praises جلّتwere exalted عُلىًin loftiness عَنabove قدرهits worth
بمدائح جلّت عُلىً عَن قدره
You adorned a neck bereft of its pearls
You adorned an idle one beyond his worth
With praises whose loftiness surpassed its worth.
With praises that exalted him above his merit
لولاwere it not for عراقةُdeep-rootedness طيبِgoodness أَصْلِكَyour lineage لمnot أكنI would be
لولا عراقةُ طيبِ أَصْلِكَ لم أكن
ممّنamong those who تهبّwafts عليهupon him نسمةa breeze عِطرهits fragrance
ممّن تهبّ عليه نسمة عِطره
Were it not for the deep-rooted goodness of your lineage, I would not be
Were it not for your noble origin’s virtue
Among those upon whom a breeze of its fragrance wafts.
I would not be one on whom its fragrance blows
منfrom أينwhere ليfor me وَصْفُdescribing الكمالperfection وَفَضْلُكُمْand your excellence
من أين لي وَصْفُ الكمال وَفَضْلُكُمْ
يَرْويهrecounts it كلُّevery مُحَدِّثٍnarrator عنfrom بحرهits sea
يَرْويه كلُّ مُحَدِّثٍ عن بحره
How can I describe perfection, when your excellence
Whence do I have the words for your perfection?
Is recounted by every narrator from its sea?
Every talker draws from that sea to water it
وَكَفَاكُمُand suffices you الشّورىal-Shura (Consultation) إذاif لمnot يَكْفِكُمْsuffice you
وَكَفَاكُمُ الشّورى إذا لم يَكْفِكُمْ
بَيْتٌa house كتابُthe Book of اللَّهGod جاءcame بِطُهْرِهwith its purity
بَيْتٌ كتابُ اللَّه جاء بِطُهْرِه
And al-Shura is enough for you, if you need more than
The council suffices you if God does not
A House whose purity the Book of God proclaimed.
A house, the Book of God came with its purity
فلكمso for you مودّتُناour affection ولكنand yet صَفْوُهاits purest essence
فلكم مودّتُنا ولكن صَفْوُها
قَصْرٌreserved exclusively علىfor عثمانناour Uthman فيin عصرهhis time
قَصْرٌ على عثماننا في عصره
So our affection is yours, yet its purest essence
Our affection is yours but its quintessence
Is reserved for our Uthman in his time.
Is limited for our Uthman in his time
فلهso for him الرّضىfavor منfrom ربّناour Lord ولهand for him الهناjoy
فله الرّضى من ربّنا وله الهنا
وبلوغُهand his attainment ماwhat يَرْتجيhe hopes for منfrom دهرهhis lifetime
وبلوغُه ما يَرْتجي من دهره
So may he have favor from our Lord, and joy,
So God’s pleasure and our love are his
And attain what he hopes for in his lifetime.
And that he attain all he hopes from fate
واللّهand God يمنَحُهgrants him العلومَthe sciences بأسرهاin their entirety
واللّه يمنَحُه العلومَ بأسرها
ويسرّهand gladdens him برقائقٍwith subtleties منfrom سرّهHis secret
ويسرّه برقائقٍ من سرّه
And may God grant him every branch of knowledge,
And God grants him all knowledge in full
And gladden him with subtleties from His secret.
And gladdens him with subtleties from His mysteries
