Who, my God, will grant me patience amid my afflictions—
Who gives me patience amid my tribulations
those of the present, the past, and what is to come?
In the present, past and future alike

You created me a poet: were an angel to pass by me,
You created me a poet, if a king passed me
hidden from sight, it would draw my attention;
He'd shy from my gaze, wary of my attentions

Or a bird sang in the grove, drunk with joy

Or a yearning that saddened me with its sighs

As the heavens scattered their blue stars

I would sense the spirit in all its wondrous works,
I'd feel the spirit in all its wonders
and express it as feeling in two little verses.
And reveal it as emotion in my verses

Where can I find patience, when all events
Whence comes patience when events without exception
were created by You to disturb the serenity of my hours?
Are made to trouble the calm of my hours

At home, in revels, in joys, in the meadows
my merriment among the gardens, and even in my prayers—
Between gardens, even in my prayers

And vainly I hope for a day on which I may live
And I vainly hoped for a day to live
contented—for I have not sought my revenge.
With tranquil heart, but my fates denied me
