O you who came forward to defend the one

Who claimed the country was tribes and peoples,

If your intention was to declare someone right to be wrong,

And deem right the opinion that had been faulted,

Out of bias within yourself, or to champion a friend

Who was defeated by the refutation of his words,

Glad tidings to you, you there: you have attained what

You hope for, replying with logic turned upside down.

    Indeed, the proofs you advanced

And repeated have been thoroughly refuted.

Who in the country says that our emir

Does not desire unification and rapprochement?

Did he ever say, “O sons of Barqa,”

For us to see division in his words?

On the contrary, the call was explicit:

“O Libya, O my beloved people!”

Indeed, the emir and our country's unity

Are everyone's goal, in word and heart.

O you who deceive yourself about the facts,

Say what you wish, and fear no rebuke.

And aid your friend, wrong or right.

Or are you not a free, gifted writer?

And pass judgment on the poets, and tell them:

“Do not persist in destroying our grammar.”

And listen; do not be angry, for I offer sincere advice,

If you are discerning in what you claim.

    أما القشور فلن تكون عيوبا

    Consider the useful opinion in its essence;

As for the husks, they will not count as flaws.

Or were you misled by the verse whose final foot

Contains “black ones,” whose inflection you see explicitly stated?

Were you unaware, in the art of prosody, of the poetic license

Of iqwāʾ, you there? Are you not a man of letters?

What did you gain by criticizing a sound statement,

Only to bring reproach upon yourself?

I am truly ashamed to answer one who

Has said almost nothing but partisan prejudice.
