O Abu al-Ala, will you not share some news,

while you are in a world whose secrets are unknown?

What did you say in the grave when the angels came—did

you convince them with tales and poems?

Or was that imagination of yours in life? How often

you bewildered us with the mighty imagination within you!

    You feared no one in your earthly life;

why did you not rebel against the Creator in the next,

and come to us, defying death, to regale us

with an account of your journey through Paradise and Hell?

Containing truths, not the weaving of imagination, nor

    a storyteller's embellishments, nor a sorcerer's incantations.

    خبر فما جال عباد وفجار

    And it is said that scouts do not lie to their people;

tell us, for neither the devout nor the wicked have journeyed there.

We are indeed bewildered by the nature of your world,

while we dwell in a world sprung from fired clay.

O Abu al-Ala, now that you belong

to a world cleansed of evildoers' schemes,

what would you do if you saw our world,

and people bound for war are sheep for a butcher?

Would you buy newspapers that announce

the killing of thousands and the destruction of cities?

Or would you call down upon all people what

    Noah insistently asked of God?

Or would you stay secluded as usual, keeping away

from everyone, in a corner of the house?

No doubt you find dwelling in the forest better than

my dwelling in lands where man is like a beast of prey.

    For wild beasts in this age are more merciful than humans;

they are the beasts, appearing in the garb of the righteous.

O Abu al-Ala, today we live in an age

in which truth has found no champions.

You claimed to be a captive of the two prisons, yet

you were free, submitting to no current.

You protested in defense of a palm that stole:

"Why was it severed for a quarter-dinar?"

Who, then, defends a soul driven to

death, with no offense to punish and no blood vengeance?

If you set free a flea you had caught,

though it was used to hurting your naked body,

to kill the unbowed or enslave the free.

    demolishing homes and subjugating lands,

and wronged us with inventions that destroy the pil-

lars of civilization with steel and fire.

Surely ignorance is better than knowledge whose results are

bloodshed and one neighbor's oppression of another.

for every inventor is an Azrael of lives.

And after all this we claim that we are human,

and that our consciences wield their authority within us.

The human intellect has swollen, and its effects

have turned awry: it has brought evil and shame.

Let us go back, then, or let us be human,

striving toward good as long as we remain in this abode.
