For whom did You create reason—for those who sought

the happiness of life in a world of joys?

Or for those who acted tyrannically on earth and committed

    crimes there, or offenses there?

Or for those whose hearts have long been hard,

who do not deny a poor man little scraps of bread?

And even if the world watches them,

they feel nothing for anyone who complains of wounds.

And even if they feign blindness to their true nature,

they look askance whenever they direct their gaze at people.

And for the God-fearing, O Lord, You have created

the misery of life in a world of miseries.

Enslaved, naked, hungry, and they have no

dwellings to shelter them for an appointed time.

Each day, their world is like their resurrection:

they are unjustly repaid with misery in its harshest forms.

O Lord, be gentle with us, and spare Your servants from

this denial of Your justice among creatures.

Or strip them of awareness; like beasts, they would not seek

anything but to fill their little bellies.

O Lord, depravity has brought ruin upon us, so do not

punish us in vengeance for sins.

For You have spoken—and excellent is the speech wherein descended

noble virtues, hoped for within verses.

They ruled over us, then heightened the torment to the point

that they bequeathed us many forms of enmity.

They betrayed their pledges, and yesterday Mussolini, on

the ministerial chair, was showing us the signs.

Take heed, then tell those taken in by his speech:

Do not rejoice, and prepare yourselves for calamities.
