My heart is bewildered; I do not know—shall I take my own life,

or be content with what fate brings?

And how can a rational person accept what they have decreed:

    that fate triumphs over thought?

No decree of fate has come to pass without a cause

arising from us, as sensory evidence and effects have proved.

Indeed, calamities, if they befall you, come from what

your hands have earned; in His judgment are lessons for you.

So nothing has come to us through fate,

but through our deeds—and a person has power to act.

We are a people whose desires rebel, out of infatuation

with evil, if thought and judgment grow sound.

Each sings of his own Layla, awaiting

union with her, and spends a lifetime waiting.
