Your calling, O heart—enough of calling!

Will you not cease making me drink misery?

I am parched; no mirage ever gleamed

Upon the desert but I mistook it for water.

And you, a moth of the night, every light

You followed, and every lightning flash that shone.

My heart, tell her, when we parted

In sorrow, with no hope of meeting again:

I loved you; I sang no poetry in your presence,

But I wrung out my blood for you.

If in love of you I lost my soul,

Then I am not wasting my blood for you in vain.

    كأني قد بلغتُ بك السماء

    Passion for you was the prayer niche of the prayer hall;

As though through you I had reached heaven.

Within it I cast off my human nature,

But there I did not cast off my pride.

So I did not bow in its courtyard for show,

Nor like a slave, in abasement and bowing low.

But I loved you with a free man's love—

Who dies when he wills and as he wishes.

    حبه المحراب والكعبة بيته

    And a beloved was the world of my hopes;

His love was the prayer niche, and his house the Kaaba.

If anyone ever walked on roses for his sake,

Yet my path was thorns, and I walked it.

If anyone ever gave a thirsty man water,

I, though, gave him drink from the cup of life.

The heart fluttered for him, quivering,

With the flicker of a lamp as its oil runs dry.

    وطوى صفحة حبي فطويته

    He had forgotten me, so I turned cold toward him;

And he folded away the page of my love, so I folded him away.

I came to the blessed Nile, lamenting

My times, for my cares had multiplied upon me.

And I wiped my palm and forehead with its water,

Hoping to calm the turmoil of a fevered man.

And I sat emptying a quiver filled

With memories, both new and old.

Alas for a love that died unsullied,

And a lifetime's youth that passed without reproach.

Loved ones and companions betrayed me, but I did not betray

My pledge to them, and I forgave as a noble soul forgives.

Can feeble grass frighten me, I who

Surrendered my skin to the stinging thorns?

And if my heart flags, in its place beats

My dignity, and the pride of my cares throbs.

Indeed, I carry my quiver, defying

My times with it, those who envy me, and my foes.

Before God's throne I bow a head that has never bowed

In abasement, even once, in a mighty man's courts.
