You spent your life recounting to me,

And I recall your wound in love.

فقم نسخر من الأَمَلِ

ومن أعماقنا نضحك

So rise; let us scoff at hope,

So let us mock hope

And let us laugh from our depths.

And from our depths let us laugh

وقم نسخر من الدنيا

وقم نسخر من الدنيا

وقم نَلهُ مع اللاهي

وقم نَلهُ مع اللاهي

And rise; let us scoff at the world,

And let us mock the world

And rise; let us make merry with the merrymaker.

And let us frolic with the heedless

طويتُ صحيفة الأمس

طويتُ صحيفة الأمس

فَدَعها في يد الله

فَدَعها في يد الله

I have folded yesterday’s page,

I folded the page of yesterday

So leave it in the hand of God.

So leave it in God's hands

هي الدنيا كما كانت

هي الدنيا كما كانت

وماذا ينفع الوعظ

وماذا ينفع الوعظ

It is the world, as it has always been,

Such is the world as it was

And what good does preaching do?

And what good is preaching

وما عتبت ولا خانت

وما عتبت ولا خانت

ولكن خانك الحظّ

ولكن خانك الحظّ

And it has neither reproached nor betrayed,

It neither blamed nor betrayed

And yet fortune betrayed you.

But luck betrayed you

أردنا الجاه والذهبا

أردنا الجاه والذهبا

فلم يتلطَّف المولى

فلم يتلطَّف المولى

We wanted prestige and gold,

We wanted glory and gold

But the Lord showed no kindness.

But the Lord was not gracious

وهذا العمر قد ذهبا

وهذا العمر قد ذهبا

وأحسن ما به ولّى

وأحسن ما به ولّى

And this life has already passed,

And this life has passed

And the best it held is gone.

It is best to let it go
