For whom are those languid eyes withered,
And who is the phantom, head on a pillow, borne along?
And whose illusion is cushioned and carried?

O you ailing king, awake to find
the one who pines for you, ailing among your visitors.
Your pains among the returning ailing.

On the day of return, how long I waited for you, weeping,
The day of return, how much I waited for you crying,
and sent my dreams to you as a messenger.
And sent my dreams to you as messengers.

I spoke about you, leaving no one unaddressed,
I spoke of you, leaving no speaker,
and asked until I left no one unquestioned.
And asked until I left no questioned.

It may heal deep sorrows or soothe anguish.

For God’s sake, say is there a moment beyond you
that brought a forsaking friend and a friend together?
That gathered an emigrant beloved and a beloved?

after it will find life superfluous.
Beyond it finds life superfluous.

Darkness passed, while you filled my thoughts;
Darkness passed with you filling my thoughts,
morning drew near, and I remained absorbed.
And dawn approached while I remained busy.

The day carried of burdens tiring.

of someone who eases its burden as it is borne.
Of one who lightens its carried load.

And tribulations followed in the horizon of youth,
left me no clear sky I could see as beautiful.
Leaving me no wholesome morning I see beautifully.

Precious youth has gone, and a spreading tree has vanished,
Precious youth is gone, and the grove is gone
which spread for us fidelity's sheltering shade.
That gave us the shade of faithful shadow.

Those days when my speech failed me before you,
Days fail me before you though my reason,
and when I fell silent, everything was said.
So when silent, all is said.

Stumbles out of my lips bashfully.

and who made me taste it, shattering and ruinous.
So it made me drink it fermented and turbid.

For the heart's bitterest suffering is a passionate longing
The most agonizing of what the heart endured is a love
that blazed, while what lay buried within it remained unknown.
That kindled while its seed remained unknown.
