This is her home, so do not leave me, you two.

Ah, my two companions, what has befallen me!

Do you two say I have already ceased grieving for her

And wiped the tears from my eyelids?

Then why the trembling in my blood?

And why the shudder in my being?

And life's hypocrisy, and the days' laughter

At me, and the lie of consolation?

I pour out tears once, then become

    That carefree, contented scoffer.

I pour out tears once, then go on.

I loved once in my lifetime.

    I loved once, and experienced

Death a thousand times—if only you two knew!

My laughter is my revolt, and the guffaw

Of mockery is, to me, the volcano's rebellion.
