Say to the minister of truth, who is the one

Through whose wisdom affairs have been set right:

Take from my words a pledge that I

Am their envoy to the arena of glory.

O you who, in your tenure, made the endowments

A city, its wasteland turned to palaces,

And unearthed within them the treasures that

The ages had swept over and effaced.

You unearthed the geniuses in their midst,

Seeking out all that was of great worth.

So all that has been said, and all that remains unsaid,

Of your immense, copious, abundant bounty,

Of what passed upon a lip, falling short,

And what lay hidden in the folds of bosoms,

Is, in fairness, Abd al-Haqq's rightful due,

His, though he refuses to make his way toward it:

A greeting returned to its source,

And a bouquet presented to the minister.

Glory to my Lord! We have seen the darkness

Dispelled in your tenure by a radiant dawn.

You kept pace with this age in its course,

And the age soars on eagles' wings.

You persevered with the endowments until they saw

The breaker of fetters and the captive's redeemer.

How often they mocked them for their tortoise!

So let them behold them flying on a wing.

O you who unearth within them the treasures of wisdom,

From every radiant one with few equals,

From the house's gold and its marvels:

A youth great-hearted, pure of conscience.

He has the sea's qualities in repose,

And in him a spirit like the flow of a brook.

Take from his virtues and from his knowledge

What roses bestow and seas enfold.
