Pause, O heart, by the dwellings a while.
Stop, my heart, for a moment at the dwellings,
For here youth was squandered on loved ones.
And here a stubborn father was humiliated,
وهناand here أذلَّhumbled إباءهhis pride متكبرa proud man

And here a proud man humbled his pride;
His heart's eyes commanded and he obeyed.
Eyes commanded his heart, and it obeyed.
I felt the old pain and it returned to me,

جرحa wound أبيتI refused لعهدهto its days إرجاعاa return
I felt the old malady, and there returned to me
The wound I hoped had healed came back anew.
A wound to whose days I had refused to return.
And hope wandered aimlessly as though
ومشىand walked معwith الأملhope الذهولbewilderment كأنماas though

And bewilderment walked beside hope, as though
My mind was scattered by events.
Calamities had sent my mind flying in every direction.
My troubles multiplied and erased me,

ومحونand they effaced حتىeven السقمillness والأوجاعاand the pains
My troubles multiplied upon me and effaced me,
Erasing even sickness and pains.
And effaced even illness and pain.
O you who left me, you left completely,
ياO منyou whom هجرتI forsook لقدindeed هجرتI have forsaken إلىuntil مدىa certain time
فإلىso until اللقاءthe meeting ولنand will not أقولI say وداعاfarewell
O you whom I forsook, I have forsaken you only for a time;
Until we meet again, I will not say farewell.
So, until we meet—and I will not say farewell.
