Oh, the beloved for whom I'd give my life,

the morning he visited and offered greetings,

    ركابه يتضرَّم

    bashful, while love in

    his train blazed;

and silent, though he was a grove

    that sang a thousand songs.

My heart called to him, and communing

with him were my thoughts, though he knows:

    O dawn of magic and

    light and beauty, speak!

    Speak plainly, or else help

my torn heart, and have mercy.

    O invader who strikes the

heart, though it is a shattered fortress:

    when you rose over it,

it grew weak, moaned, and surrendered.

    O enchantment, gliding gracefully,

    and mercy, smiling:

    if I have no hope,

nor any spoils fall to my lot,

or no share remains for me,

let me dream of your beauty.
