Your heights weave its lofty meaning

سناه يملأ الكون الوسيعا

If light is a fabric of art,

If splendor is the fabric of art

whose radiance fills the vast universe,

Its glow fills the vast universe

فحولك حيثما تمشي وتسعى

فحولك حيثما تمشي وتسعى

قصيدٌ عامر غمر الربوعا

then around you, wherever you walk and strive,

So your feats wherever you walk and strive

is a flourishing poem that has flooded the lands.

تكلم حيثما تمضي مبيناً

وما عرف البيان ولا البديعا

It speaks eloquently wherever you go,

You speak wherever you pass, elucidating

though it has known neither rhetoric nor verbal ornament.

What eloquence and rhetoric did not know

حببت سناك أتبعه بشعري

حببت سناك أتبعه بشعري

وفخراً أن أكون له تبيعا

وفخراً أن أكون له تبيعا

I loved your radiance and follow it with my verse,

I loved your radiance and followed it with my verse

and take pride in being its follower.

Proud that I can be its follower

مدحتك جهد مقدرة القوافي

مدحتك جهد مقدرة القوافي

فضقت بها مقصِّرة جميعا

فضقت بها مقصِّرة جميعا

I praised you with all the power my rhymes could muster,

I praised you, my rhymes’ capacity exhausted

so I grew frustrated with them, all falling short.

So they fell short, all inadequate

أتعصاني مغردة بنفسي

أتعصاني مغردة بنفسي

معودة هنالك أن تطيعا

معودة هنالك أن تطيعا

Do they defy me, singing within my soul,

My warbling nightingales disobey me

accustomed there to obey?

Habituated there to obey

أقول لها وقد كلت قصوراً

أقول لها وقد كلت قصوراً

رويدك واهدئي لن نستطيعا

رويدك واهدئي لن نستطيعا

I tell them, now wearied by their shortcomings:

I say to them, though they’ve wearied of palaces

“Take your time and be calm; we shall not manage it.”

Gently, be still, we cannot

يراك الناس حيث ترى عظيما

يراك الناس حيث ترى عظيما

كريماً في تسامحه وديعا

كريماً في تسامحه وديعا

People see you, wherever you appear, as a great man,

People see you as great wherever you are

generous in his forbearance, gentle.

Generous in your tolerance and calm

وأنت النهر دفاقاً قوياً

وأنت النهر دفاقاً قوياً

إذا ما هم لم يملك رجوعا

إذا ما هم لم يملك رجوعا

And you are the river, gushing forth, mighty,

You are the river, flowing powerful

which, once resolved, has no power to turn back.

If they intend, they cannot turn back

يفيض على الربوع جلال نعمى

يفيض على الربوع جلال نعمى

ويغشى من حوائلها المنيعا

ويغشى من حوائلها المنيعا

It floods the lands with the splendor of bounty,

The glory of your blessings floods the meadows

and engulfs even their impregnable barriers.

And saturates their firm bastions
