ياO ليلةًa night سنحتappeared فيin العمرlife وانصرمَتand passed away
هَلاwhy not رجعتِyou returned وهلاand why not عادَreturned أحبابيmy loved ones
O night that came into my life and passed away,
O night that passed in my life and went away
Would you not return—and would my loved ones not return?
If only you would return and my loved ones come back
ياOh ليتif only شهدَكyour honey إذَsince لمdid not يبقremain ليfor me أبداًforever
لَمdid not يُبقِleave behind فيin القلبthe heart تذكاراًa remembrance منof الصابِbitter sap
Oh, if only your honey, since it did not remain mine forever,
I wish your farewell when nothing lasts forever
had left no remembrance of bitter sap in the heart.
Left no memories in my heart anymore
لَمdid not أنسI forget مُهديَتيshe who gave me جلبابَهاher robe وعلىwhile upon
جسميmy body منfrom السقمsickness منهاfrom her أيُّwhat a جلبابِrobe
I have not forgotten her who gave me her robe, while upon
I can't forget her last gift, her cloak
my body lies such a robe of sickness from her!
And the sickness it left on my body under it

Joseph's shirt restored sight to the eye,
Joseph's shirt returned the seeing eye
and so that bowed, dejected one gained the light.
So the blinded one succeeded with light
وأنتand you لوif أنّthat روحاًa soul أزمعتresolved upon سفراًa journey
أعدتَهاyou would bring it back وخَيالُwhile the specter الموتof death بالبابِat the door
And you, if a soul resolved upon a journey,
And you, if a soul readied for travel
would bring it back, with death's specter at the door.
You bid it farewell while death was at the door
فَذُدso ward off خيالَthe specter المناياof deadly fates اليومَtoday عنfrom رجُلٍa man

So ward off the specter of deadly fates today from a man
So ward off today death's specter from a man
in whose soul they have sunk the likenesses of fangs.
Whose soul was gripped by the claws of death
وإنand if عجزتَyou are unable فكنthen be فيin الموتdeath ليfor me كفناًa shroud

أمتI may die وألقىand I meet إلهيmy God غيرَnot هيَّابِfearful
And if you cannot, then be my shroud in death,
And if you can't, then in death be my shroud
that I may die and meet my God unafraid.
I die and meet my God without fear
