ياO وحدتيmy solitude جئتI came كيso that أنسَىI may forget وهاand behold أنذاhere I am
ماnot زلتI have ceased أسمعI hear أصداءًechoes وأصواتاand voices
O my solitude, I came to forget, and here I am,
O my solitude, I came here to forget, yet
Still hearing echoes and voices.
I still hear echoes and voices.
مهماhowever much تصاممتُI feigned deafness عنهاto them فهيyet they are هاتفةٌcalling out
However much I feign deafness to them, they keep calling:
No matter how I insist on ignoring them, they keep calling,
O you poor fugitive—there is no escape!
O you poor fleeing one, never!

وجمَّعتand gathered ذِكراًmemories قدalready كُنَّthey were أشتاتاscattered
They dragged longings upon me from their unknown reaches,
Desires have drawn me into their ignorant ways,
And gathered memories that had been scattered.
And gathered memories that were once scattered.
ماhow أسخفabsurd الوحدةَsolitude الكبرىvast وأضيعهاand how futile it is
إذاwhen الهواتفthe calling voices قدalready أرجعنthey brought back ماwhat فاتاwas gone
How absurd this vast solitude, and how futile,
How absurd is this great solitude and how lost it is
When the calling voices have brought back what is gone.
When the voices have brought back what is past.
بَعثنthey revived ماwhat كانwas مطوياًfolded away بمرقدِهin its resting place
ولمand did not يزَلنَthey cease إلىuntil أنthat هبَّsprang up ماwhat ماتاhad died
They revived what lay folded away in its resting place,
They resurrected what was folded in its grave,
And did not cease until what had died sprang up.
And did not cease until the dead came back to life.

وأينand where وحدتهits solitude باتتit spent the night كماjust as باتاit spent the night
The heart, pierced, turned toward its solitude,
The heart roams wounded in its solitude,
And where was its solitude? It spent the night as the heart did.
And where is its solitude? It passed the night as it did.

Until, when it found neither its thirst quenched nor its hunger sated,
Until, finding no respite or contentment,
It turned to crippled hope and fed upon it.
It surrendered to truncated hope, and was sustained.
