يا ربِّ عفوكَ قد عبدتُكَ مشركاً
شِركاًidolatry تضيقُare too narrow بإثمهfor its sin الرحماتُmercies
شِركاً تضيقُ بإثمه الرحماتُ
O Lord, Your pardon! I have worshipped You as an idolater—
O Lord, Your forgiveness, I have worshipped You as an idolater
An idolatry whose sin no mercy can encompass.
An idolatry whose sin narrows down the mercies
أنتَYou الذيthe One who خَلَقَcreated الحياةَlife وإنماand yet
أنتَ الذي خَلَقَ الحياةَ وإنما
قَبلَbefore الهوىlove تلكَthat الحياةُlife مماتُdeath
قَبلَ الهوى تلكَ الحياةُ مماتُ
You are the One who created life, and yet

Before love, that life is death.
Before desire, that life is death
عيونُeyes ليلىLayla's قدindeed خلقنَthey created بِيَin me الهوىlove
عيونُ ليلى قد خلقنَ بِيَ الهوى
فإذاand behold هواهاlove for her للحياةِto life حياةُlife
فإذا هواها للحياةِ حياةُ

O Lord, pardon me: those are love's deities,
