O beauty of youth and solace of souls,

Tell us of your ill-fated husband.

You yourself, speak of his sensory blindness,

And describe passion to me through touch.

Tell us of the dearly cherished flame,

And beauty that makes a free man a slave,

And the blind man's madness when he begs,

While he gropes toward his fire like the Magi.

O beauty, cast and flung into the dust!

Oh, the injustice of fortunes—and fortune is blind!

And my affliction is that I call it injustice,

Yet it is a word never found in the dictionary.

Ah, the cruelty of nature! She carved out

Darkness in place of light, then took pity,

Unwittingly, on his eye, and left

    A small window in its blotted-out expanse;

A window from which anger issues,

And cunning and malice peer out of it.

It faced us in a visage it did not adorn,

Like the paltry wick in a lantern.

Like the lowliest of cattle when they tied him,

    And you see them blindfold him with a rag;

Then, whenever he disobeyed them, they beat him,

And he walked to the madman's singing.

And you see him and say: he drips with hatred—

An animal that wants to pounce.

God is enough for you; you lived gazing at the ground,

So remain in it, denied the light of the suns.
