Inʿam, O soul of the dew and its solace,

You are poetry, and you are the poet’s soul.

In which of your charms, those that

Captivate the mind, lies this thought’s inspiration?

In your hair, or your throat, or in a graceful, swaying form,

Swaying to and fro, or in enchanting beauty?

Do not marvel at the poetry—you are a song,

And the melody is the work of God Almighty.

And I am like a bird singing among the hills,

Stirred to sorrow by the boughs of blossoming spring.

It sang of a meaning in nature, dwelling

In her tranquil eyelid, and of another unveiled.

And so are you: how much hidden beauty

In the soul is linked to other, visible beauty!
