أصبحتُI awoke يومon the day of الجمعهFriday
أصبحتُ يوم الجمعه
ذاpossessed of غربةestrangement ماhow أضيعهwasted it is
ذا غربة ما أضيعه
I awoke on Friday,
I became on Friday
in estrangement—how wasted that day was!
A stranger I do not lose
منفرداًalone لاno خلَّclose friend ليfor me
منفرداً لا خلَّ لي
وأينand where مَنthe one who قلبيmy heart معهwith him
وأين مَن قلبي معه
alone, without a close friend;
Alone, no friend for me
and where is the one my heart is with?
And where is he who my heart is with him
ضاقتgrew narrow بيَfor me الأرضthe earth فماso there is no
ضاقت بيَ الأرض فما
فيin فُسحةthe expanse الكونthe universe سَعَهroom
في فُسحة الكون سَعَه
The earth has closed in on me, so there is no
The land narrowed for me, so not
room in the universe’s wide expanse.
In the vastness of the universe fits me
أقطعI get through يوميmy day مُبطئاًslowly
أقطع يومي مُبطئاً
كأننيas though I لنwill not أقطعهget through it
كأنني لن أقطعه
I pass my day slowly,
I pass my day slowly
as though I would never get through it.
As if I will not pass it
إنيindeed I امرؤٌa man يُفضيturns إلىto
إني امرؤٌ يُفضي إلى
أزمانهhis stretches of time المرقَّعهpatched together
أزمانه المرقَّعه
Indeed, I am a man who turns to
I am a man who pours into
his patched-together stretches of time,
His ragged times
يَلُمُّgathers منfrom شَتاتهاtheir scattered fragments
يَلُمُّ من شَتاتها
بجهدهthrough his effort ماwhatever وَسِعَهhe could manage
بجهده ما وَسِعَه
gathering from their scattered fragments,
He suffers from their fragmentation
through his effort, as much as he can.
With his effort as much as he can
فلاso not يصيبُhe finds غيرother than ماwhat
فلا يصيبُ غير ما
روَّعهterrified him وفزَّعهand frightened him
روَّعه وفزَّعه
So he finds nothing but what
So he only attains what
has terrified him and frightened him,
Terrified and scattered him
ولاand not يُصيبhe finds غيرother than ماwhat
ولا يُصيب غير ما
أمَلَّهbored him وصدَّعهand made his head ache
أمَلَّه وصدَّعه
and finds nothing but what
And only attains what
has bored him and made his head ache.
He wished and split him
ياO هندHind منwho يُعيدwill restore ليto me
يا هند من يُعيد لي
آماليَmy hopes المُزعزعهshaken
آماليَ المُزعزعه
O Hind, who will restore to me
O Hind, who will restore to me
my shaken hopes?
My shaken hopes
وإنّand indeed يوماًa day واحداًsingle
وإنّ يوماً واحداً
حِبَالُهits cords مُقطَّعهcut apart
حِبَالُه مُقطَّعه
And indeed, a single day—
And one day
its cords are cut apart.
Its ropes are cut
فكيفhow then لوif مرّpassed بناover us
فكيف لو مرّ بنا
ثلاثةٌthree أوor أربعةfour
ثلاثةٌ أو أربعة
How would it be, then, if we lived through
So how would it be if
three days or four?
Three or four passed upon us
قلبيmy heart خلاis empty منof نسمةٍa breeze
قلبي خلا من نسمةٍ
مشرقةٍradiant مُرَصَّعهjewel-studded
مشرقةٍ مُرَصَّعه
My heart is empty of a breeze,
My heart is empty of
radiant and jewel-studded,
A radiant adorned breeze
طالَعَهُgreeted it اليومthe day بهاwith it
طالَعَهُ اليوم بها
كأنهas though it قدalready ودّعهbade it farewell
كأنه قد ودّعه
with which the day greeted it,
It saw it today with it
as though it had bidden it farewell.
As if it bid it farewell
إنif عاشهlived through it دونكwithout you ياO
إن عاشه دونك يا
هندHind تمنَّىwished for مصرعهits death
هند تمنَّى مصرعه
If it lives that day without you, O
If he lives without you O
Hind, it longs for its own death.
