I asked you, O rock of the meeting-place,

When will time reunite what it has parted?

So, O rock that brought two hearts together,

Both sought refuge in its exquisite beauty.

When time was relentless with its decrees,

They renewed their solemn pledge upon its back.

Upon you we read the book of life,

And love broke open its sealed secret.

We see the sun melting in the surging sea,

And await the full moon as it rises.

When the west unfurls its robes,

And unleashes in the soul what it unleashes,

We say: has the sun dyed it,

And left its spilled blood within it?

Or is the west, like the heart, bleeding from wounds,

With a wish too hard to attain?

So, O image in the reaches of the clouds,

In it we saw our engulfing sorrow.

God be our refuge from an image within the soul,

The young man sees it whenever he bows his head.

He sees the image of the wound in the heart's folds,

    Still inflamed and searing.

    And fidelity denies it healing,

And remembrance refuses to show mercy.

And O rock of the pledge, I have returned to you,

And what shattered our union has shattered it.

I show you the graying of my martyred heart,

Yet gray hair has not crowned my parting.
