For your eyes' sake, we endured what we endured,

And were content with deprivation and humiliation.

And it became bearable if you showed tenderness, even as a phantom.

And where is your worshipped phantom—where?

Come, for no night traveler remains in the neighborhood,

And the houses dozed as the night wore on.

And darkness settled over their windows,

And they once looked out like a thousand eyes.

Come, for I have seen the universe bend tenderly

Toward me and understand the anguish that besets me,

And unveil the stars for me, yet I disdain them,

And I close my eyes: I want no star but you.

And I wait with my eyes and hearing,

As all my days have waited for you.

And was love ever anything but waiting?

My winter, in you, awaits the spring.

I see endless ages engulfing me like a sea,

Of immense depth, its bottom unknown.

And darkness conspires against me, until

It is as though I were descending into the depths of a cave.

    And the storms roar mockingly,

And stab me with the tips of spears.

And take pity after their cruelty, then pass on

To knock on every window and door.

    فحين سكتُّ كلمني إِبائي

    So I shouted at them until my throat ran dry;

Then, when I fell silent, my proud defiance spoke to me.

And torment made me aware of the depth of my wound,

And deeper than it is the wound of pride.

And when my eye failed to behold you,

I glimpsed you approaching through my heart's inner awareness.

So I hear the tread of feet drawing near,

And listen intently to the rustle of a garment.

And I create a phantom just as I desire,

And draw hopes and the beloved close.

And I fashion a conversation just as I desire,

For one far away who has become close to my heart.

I stretch both my hands toward him in yearning,

I share my sorrow with him through pent-up tears.

So my heart races ahead of me to meet him,

With a leap, then it grows cold within my ribs.

    Then the passions roar mockingly,

And stab me with the tips of spears.

And take pity after their cruelty, then pass on

To knock on every window and door.
