It folded away the years and pierced the unseen and the darkness—

a lightning flash that gleamed in your eyes and smiled.

O lightning coursing through the night, flashing to me from two stars,

what do the fates conceal for me behind them?

Have you brought me to eternity's thresholds—or to a snare

you set for me from illusion's deceit—or to a dream?

It is as though I behold a sea and a storm,

and a skiff crashing into the unknown tomorrow.

You carried me to a heaven I had already journeyed to by night,

in spirit and thought, without moving a foot toward it.

It grew translucent as mist and delicate in its veils,

till I could almost see within it the Tablet and the Pen.

I saw two hearts whose love the unseen had inscribed,

and a scribe who had drawn them in the language of light.

By the magic of your eyes—I swear by them—

do not ask my heart for an oath of its devotion.

Ah, your eyes—like a lovely spring grown clear,

and flowing smoothly, its waves agleam.

    What are you two? You are a cup, though sweet;

death lies within it—and no excuse for one who survives.

When love cast our two hearts toward a destiny

whose will held sway, we asked neither for whom nor why.

In a moment that gathers the ages—their present,

what is to come, and what has passed away—

within two hearts was laid every love

on earth, borne by its tales since ancient times.

Each beholds within the other's eye

waves of love and longing crashing together,

and an arena where love's pretexts wage war:

within it strife, and within it thirst for an embrace.

Ah, the two pools in your eyes, when they shone

with longing flashing, ablaze behind the water!

And the two opposites brought together in two cups!

For they are the two that quench thirst, and the two that thirst.

With what bow, what unerring arrow, and what hand

has your love struck, O beautiful tyrant?

It shoots and heals at once; and most wondrous of all,

the one whose hands hold the cure did not know it.

And how can one heal me when I do not ask him

for a cure, and prefer sleeplessness and sickness for his sake?

If death had means of bringing me nearer

to your favor, death would be easy to brave.

Indeed, the nights of my life that were empty of you

passed in desolation, every one of them barren.

The heart looked back on them, anguished and regretful,

and bit its thumb in sorrow and remorse.
