O finest of loved ones and close friends,

Forgive me if my eloquence fails me.

Poetry offers no help in an hour

That surpasses all verses of praise and gratitude.

And I, who spent my life expressing

And echoing the stirrings of the heart,

Stand this evening among companions, falling short,

Bewildered, for kindness has tied my tongue.

    O poetry, through which spoke

My soul, and which flowed as my heart desires,

O my solace in life, O my lyre,

Why do I see you with your melodies held captive?

Where is eloquence, and where is what you taught me

In the days when you ran free without a rein?

Your intimate whispers in troubled times are a narcotic

Upon which wakeful sorrows fell asleep.

And people ask, their misgivings many:

Medicine and poetry—how can they accord?

Poetry is mercy to souls, and its secret

Is heaven's gift, a bounty from the Divine Judge.

And medicine is mercy to bodies; its wellspring

    Flows from that sublime outpouring.

And from the clouds, and from a spring beyond them,

Both find inspiration and draw their water.

O love, purifying hearts and washing away defilement and stains,

How sublime is lofty communion whenever

    Two burning souls sing it!

They scorned the world, and within their bodies lay

The prisoner's abasement and the jailer's cruelty.

So they gazed toward heaven and took wing,

Upward toward the horizons, ever ascending.

And they embraced beyond the clouds and filled to the brim

Their two cups with rapture and tenderness.

Write for art's sake; do not equate it with

Life's passing goods or perishable dross.

And seek inspiration from Mother Nature alone.

How many sublime meanings nature holds!

    Poetry is a kingdom, and you are its prince;

What need have poets of crowns?

    Homer—Time itself made him prince,

    And generations decreed him sovereignty.

Alight upon the flowers and stroke their eyelids,

And pour your dew for one parched with thirst.

In every grove, a breath of fragrance, and in every garden, a bouquet of sweet-scented basil.
