Why go forth tomorrow morning, and where shall I go at dusk?

Alas for the morning! It has indeed carried off my dawn.

They swept over us, showing us no mercy,

O choicest of beloved ones—what winds!

They toyed with the idol of our eyes and turned

The apple's twin yellow as wars-dye.

They carried him away like a rose forsaken by dew,

And bore him off, a phantom among phantoms.

O you who called my name, a caller I would ransom with my life,

My burning lament answered his call.

O healer of the sorrowful, you healed my wound,

And on the day of your departure, what wounds you made bleed!

I bowed my head before sundering separation,

And lowered my wing before assailing fate.

What fierce nights I spent sleepless,

In what agonies, and what struggle!

Ravaging sickness shattered my strong resolve,

And bent my defiance and curbed my rebelliousness.

And overwhelmed the angel pillowed among us,

With a lily's delicacy and the frailty of daisies.

How can I return to a place so desolate,

Its courtyards grim, its grounds deserted?

In every corner, a calling phantom,

    And a reminder of your radiant brow;

And one pillowed like a phantom, wakeful all night,

I spent the evening watching over him with a sleepless eye.

The wretched one returned to his old misery,

And a destroyer erased happiness from the world.

Alas for life today! Where is its beauty?

And to what end are my failure and my success in it?

You are the one who gave life to a dead man,

Alone upon the earth, without ambition.

You shone amid its darkness and its clouds,

And rose like a flashing bolt of lightning.
