  1. يا غلة المتلهف الصادي

    با آيتي وقصيدتي الكبرى

    O burning thirst of the yearning, parched one,

    O my miracle and my greatest poem,

  2. ماذا تركت لديّ من زاد

    إلا استعادة هذه الذكرى

    What sustenance have you left me

    Except the reliving of this memory?

  3. يا للمساء العبقري وما

    أبقى على الأيام في خلدي

    Oh, that wondrous evening, and what

    It left in my memory through the days!

  4. شفتاك شفا لوعةً وظما

    وجمالك الجبار طوع يدي

    Your lips, worn thin by yearning and thirst,

    And your overpowering beauty at my hand's command.

  5. نمشي وقد طال الطريق بنا

    ونود لو نمشي إلى الأبدِ

    We walked, and the road grew long for us,

    And wished we could walk forever.

  6. ونود لو خلت الحياة لنا

    كطريقنا وغدت بلا أحدِ

    And wished that life were ours alone,

    Like our road, with no one else left in it.

  7. نبني على أنقاض ماضينا

    قصراً من الأوهام عملاقا

    We built upon the ruins of our past

    A gigantic palace of illusions,

  8. ونظل ننسج من أمانينا

    وشيا من الأحلام براقا

    And kept weaving from our wishes

    A glittering brocade of dreams.

  9. وأظل أسقيها وتملؤ لي

    من مورد خلف الظنون خفي

    And I kept giving her drink, while she poured for me

    From a hidden spring beyond imagining,

  10. حتى إذا سكرت من الأمل

    وترنحت مالت على كتفي

    Until, when she grew drunk on hope

    And swayed, she leaned upon my shoulder.

  11. حلفت بأني مغتد معها

    حيث اغتدت وهواي في دمها

    I swore that I would set out with her

    Wherever she went, my love in her blood.

  12. فمسحت بالقبلات أدمعها

    وطبعت ميثاقي على فمها

    So I wiped away her tears with kisses

    And imprinted my pledge upon her mouth.
