    Let the soul frolic in fantasy and illusions,

    And leave my eyelids the lies of my dreams.

    على جهلِ حساد وغفلة لوّامِ

    And say, O beloved of my heart, that you are returning,

    Unbeknown to the envious and unnoticed by reproachers;

    And that, like spring, you draw near and come visiting,

    With smiling blossoms and moist calyces.

    Come, give me the wine of promises and favor,

    And let white hopes engulf my ailments.

    Is even the illusion of your love denied to one who cast

    His lifeblood into its fire without hesitation,

    And spent on it his heart and his youth,

    So nothing remained but the wound and blood-red twilight?

    And, strangely, I cherish the arrow lodged deep,

    And my heart asks me when the archer will return.

    Oh, its yearning! If only I knew of a tryst

    Beyond the nights, or some hope of a brief visit!

    And if only I had more than a grieving man's sigh,

    And the anguish of poems and the tear of pens!

    And if only I knew how an angry lover relents,

    As though his favor lay on the heights of the lofty star.

    As though the star's gleam, while the star shines,

    Were his front teeth showing through the frown of my days.

    كأنَّ اصطدام الموج معبود أقدامِ

    As though the night breeze carried his fragrance;

    As though the waves' crash were adored footsteps.

    So, O my far-off hope, if I have been guilty,

    I have indeed repented to you of my sin through my suffering.

    I loved you, not knowing what lies beyond love,

    Nor what follows my lovesickness for you, year upon year.

    وعيناك وحيي في الحياة وإلهامي

    Your beauty is my beacon, and your soul my Kaaba;

    And your eyes are my revelation in life and my inspiration.
