Neither healing has come, nor has your phantom returned.

How deceitful are hopes and the promised meeting!

How strange is love for you, O miserly one—how it creates

    Enviers from a worshipper’s breast!

Indeed I cry out when I make the vastness my bed,

And see hell as bedding at my side.

Ah, for the beautiful head that forgot and fell

Asleep, at peace, untouched by sleeplessness!

Dreams were spread as bedding for him, and stillness celebrated—

[Unclear: 'hand']—and beauty laid a pillow for him.

O love for her, what are you? What is this that

Brought strange things together and reconciled opposites?

How often I strain my gaze toward your sky,

Drawing strength and support from you.

And how often I spend the night in weariness, holding

In my mind an ever-returning phantom of her.

Then I see you toy with me like a child in the sky,

    Directing destinies however he pleases.

And I say: a love has ended just as it began—

Yet when love reaches its end, it returns.

Hope died with evening, but in truth

Death was a birth for our love.

What have you done to an eye that will not turn away,

    Gazing eagerly, looking about, searching?

And I am a stranger in the crowd, as though I were

The hopes of eyelids denied sleep.

And indeed my eye sees the crowds, yet sees no

Surging world, nor senses any people.

But when I see you, you are all humanity, and

Lifetimes, eternities, and spans of time.

And I see you as all flowers, all gardens; you

Are, to me, every gently swaying grove.
