On many a night the horizon grew clear,

and blossomed with what God had fashioned.

A fragrant breeze drifted through it,

as though the night were a fragrant garden.

I said: O my Lord, for whom have You adorned it?

And for whom are these radiant chandeliers?

    نامَ لم يسعد بهاتيك الصور

    For the carefree man, fate slept, heedless of him;

    he slept, finding no joy in those sights;

while one sorrowful at heart sang to remembrance,

his melodies bleeding, his string wounded.

    Everything was a funeral in his eyes;

neither sleep nor wakefulness was sweet.

The horizon's face grew dim, and over it loomed dark

clouds that hovered over the moon's face.

Whenever they drew near, they stretched toward him,

    like greedy hands waiting;

    dark as circling wolves,

hungry as crows in the trees.

I cried to the full moon: Heed the warnings!

Rescue the halo, hemmed in by danger!

Do not surrender the table of light to them,

do not surrender it to murky darkness!

The thunder guffawed and boomed in mockery,

as though the thunder were a brawler grown drunk.

I rose in terror, and my fist was poised,

then thrust out, then drawn back in weakness.

O the heart's anguish for the world, when

the capable man is helpless, and his reach falls short!

O the heart's anguish for beauty, when

the crows guffaw and the wolf mocks!

The rose takes refuge in thorns, but if

the pluckers grow many, the needles avail nothing.

Ah, for a bough rich with fruit,

and for the one who covets that fruit!

Ah, for doubt, and love, and

    misgivings, suspicions, and wariness,

that clothed the horizon in blackness that was no more

than a cloud crouching over thoughts.

Often I have told my heart, whenever

it moaned in my side with a dying man's moan:

If she has betrayed and spurned our love,

then add her to the other wounds.

It was a phantom of suspicions that did not last,

and a cloud of madness that passed.
