Do not weep for her: she is gone, and love for her has died.

Tomorrow the heart will have room for someone other than her.

I loved her and folded away her page; and how often

Has the wise man read a page and folded it away!

O shore of sorrows, how many waves!

Consider her a wave's crash and its echo.

    لمَّا تكَد تطأُ الثرى قدماها

    That newborn's glad tidings did not last long;

Her feet had scarcely trodden the earth.

Morning joyfully carried her call to the sands,

And the breeze drifted at evening, then announced her death.

Bring it; give me a drink, and drink to sorrow's secret,

And to a heart's ardent longing and its burning grief.

Wait, my drinking companion—how can he forget his love for her,

Who seeks solace while drinking to her memory?

You kept giving me drink to make me forget the heartache,

Until I forgot, and perceived nothing but her.

    هذا الحبابُ أعادَهَا ورواها

    We had a cup, and there was a tale;

These bubbles brought it back and recounted it.

My cup, and the sun of my love, and the cupbearer who

Pressed the radiance for my heart and gave it drink.

Now the mist has veiled her, and here I am,

Behind tears and cares, I see her.

Annihilation stole away her bubbles and her mist,

And her dreams and visions evaporated.
