Darkness has fallen; this is no time for me to stay.

It left nothing but my tears and my farewell.

The eagle descended upon the dwellings and enfolded me

In its wing and shrouded me in dusty gloom.

And the torrent has flooded the cities and villages,

And overflowed as the swollen flood overflows.

    My soul tells me that I am drowning;

I have no power in its far-spreading depths.

So, weary, to what land shall I next move

My foot, and carry my frame and my wreckage?

The earth closed in on me, though it is a wilderness

Beyond the reach of conjecture and imaginings.

It lay as still as the grave; then came the answering wails

Of the winds within it, like one kept awake by sickness.

When they moan in bereavement, I feel as though they

Have begun to resound in the very core of my bones.

Your two hands beckoned to me and said:

"Who will help the quarry the archer pursues?"

So I shook death off me, though it was my constant companion.

Wherever I turned, I did not see you before me.

I cross any closely ranked battalions,

And cleave through any throng toward your sanctuary—

A barrier of the world and of its fetters,

And the stumbling blocks of minds and understanding.

And when we are alone, an hour returns to us:

Love slept in its smiling shade.

It dawned on the horizon of life and shone,

And sparkled in the mind of the days.

How many visions that eluded me revealed themselves,

And I saw them through the eyes of inspiration!

And happiness that fled, so hard to attain,

I captured in the rapture of dreams.

And I learned what calm tastes like—I who

Had never found an hour of rest and peace.
