You are above honors, above praise.

What you have bestowed transcends all praise.

O man of great affairs, exalted are the affairs

At whose proud summit you stand.

O great man of the endowments, mighty are the deeds

That have shown us the stands taken by great men.

We did not honor you for ministerial office, rank, glory, radiance, or fine bearing.

We are a people enamored of the complete man, who pursues his task without evasion:

Broad-hearted, strong in adversity, swift to tear down, swift to build.

We have seen you like a beacon raised high,

An exemplar of strength among the strong.

And we have seen you peerless among men,

So we followed your footsteps—how closely we followed!

And we loved you, with no hypocrisy in us,

No, nor any pretense in our hearts.

Yes, by my Lord, you are an image of the past and of the glory of forefathers and fathers,

And of Upper Egypt's majesty and the valley's kingship, its banners mighty, its standard flowing wide.

Heritage may sleep generation after generation, slumbering in mute, unknown wildernesses,

    And the spirit long rooted in glory sleeps, to emerge in a brown-skinned face;

So you see it Egyptian in bearing, strength, resolve, intellect, and vigor.

I swear, majesty slumbered so it might awaken

    Anew in your radiant face.

O star, tireless through the ages, without pause or delay,

You do good openly, like a star

    وتؤديه خافياً مثل نجم

    Pouring its light across the breadth of space;

And you perform it secretly, like a star

Veiled and hidden amid the heavens.

Yet souls know its course, however deeply it lies concealed.

And a man of great deeds shines when openly spoken of, like a sword after polishing.

What beauty has spring in the garden unless

A bird sings in the lush garden?

What beauty have the sky and the full moon unless

A night traveler sings on a moonlit night?

Alas for genius lost in Egypt unless

    The orators' pulpits speak!

Alas for genius lost in Egypt unless

Its immortalization falls to the poets!

A bouquet of verse is a bouquet of roses—a sentiment

Lofty in purpose, yet slight as a gift.

    It cannot repay you even in the smallest measure;

So accept it as a token of loyalty.

How can we forget you, with the needy at your door, a throng surging with misery?

    The homeless outcast and the exhausted worker, toiling from morning till evening;

And households deep-rooted in glory have become deep-rooted in misery.

You could not bear to see orphans' tears falling upon the palms of generosity,

And widows, like a winecup after the revelers have gone,

Recalling its share of tawny wine.

Time stood in their way; every door

They knocked on was deaf to their humble cry,

Except a generous door of noble virtue—

Yours—which never once turned away from a plea.

Look at the gathering resounding with prayers,

And look at the sea surging with acclamation.

You are the draught of genius the world bestowed upon a people thirsting for greatness.

Whenever it brings forth a genius for them, they make him the focus of their hopes.

In you they blessed their day and felt secure,

With necks outstretched toward the tomorrow coming into view.

How can we forget you, independent in the practice of law,

With spotless hem and unsullied cloak?

One day the bewildered assembly stood,

Straining both ears in attentive listening,

Seeing in you a deputy and an orator,

    Overwhelming with the radiant truth,

Full to overflowing, forceful, strong, and bold,

    Annihilating opponents and enemies.
