O sea breeze, drenched in sweet perfume,

O sea breeze, steeped in fragrance,

what fragrance of the beloved do you bear?

What of the beloved's scent do you carry?

صافحتني من نواحيك يدٌ

صافحتني من نواحيك يدٌ

تمسح الدمعة عن جفن الغريب

تمسح الدمعة عن جفن الغريب

A hand from your far reaches clasped mine,

From your direction, a hand clasped mine,

wiping the tear from the exile’s eyelid.

Wiping the tear from the stranger's eyelid.

وتلقَّاني رشاشٌ كالبكا

وتلقَّاني رشاشٌ كالبكا

وهديرٌ مثل موصول النحيب

وهديرٌ مثل موصول النحيب

And sea-spray welcomed me as though in tears,

And spray greeted me like weeping,

and a roar like a mawwāl of lament.

And a roar like unbroken sobbing.
