ياO منyou who بِواديهin whose valley حَطَطتُI set down الرحالthe saddlebags
ورحَّبتand welcomed بيme وارفاتُspreading الظلالthe shades
O you, in whose valley I laid down my saddlebags,
O you in whose valley I set down my saddlebags,
and whose spreading shadows welcomed me,
And spreading shades welcomed me,
بذلتyou gave أقصىthe utmost ماthat يكونcan be القِرَىhospitality
وماand whatever تمنَّىwished for طامعٌa hopeful seeker منof منالattainment
you lavished the utmost closeness can bestow,
You gave the utmost in hospitality,
and every attainment a yearning soul could desire.
And all a hopeful seeker wished to gain.
بسطتَyou stretched out كالآبادlike eternities عمرthe lifespan المنىhopes
لطامعٍfor a hopeful seeker فيin لحظاتٍmoments قِلالfew
You stretched the lifetime of your favors out like eternities
You stretched the life of hopes like endless ages,
for one who had longed for a few brief moments.
For a hopeful seeker, in a few brief moments.

I built my prayer niche; I embraced no
no world but your love, in every state.
Faith but love of you, in every circumstance.

Give my heart a little time, until
I strip from my eyes illusion’s mask.
I strip from my eyes the mask of imagination.

Give my heart a little time, until
I strip from my heart delusion’s mirage.
I strip from my heart the mirage of delusion.
فهذهfor this الصحراءُthe desert عريانةٌnaked
ممتدّةٌstretching out خانقةٌsuffocating كالملالlike tedium
For this desert is naked,
For this desert is naked,
stretching, suffocating, like the impossible—
Sprawling, suffocating like tedium,

wanton by nature across her dunes:
Wanton by nature; upon its dunes
the wind’s drunken riot, the sands’ unbelief.
Are the wind's revelry and the sands' unbelief.
هيهاتfar from possible للقلبfor the heart صَلاةٌa prayer بهاin it
ولاnor عليهاupon it معبدٌa shrine وابتهالand supplication
Prayer for the heart within her is unthinkable,
No prayer is possible for the heart there,
nor upon her is there temple or supplication.
Nor is there a shrine upon it, or supplication.
خلعتُI cast off إيمانيmy faith علىover شكِّهاits doubt

I shed my faith before her doubt,
I cast my faith over its doubt,
and the heavy night-roving clouds scattered it.
And the heavy night-roaming clouds scattered it.

The desert called to me—she who
The desert called to me, and it is the one that
had seemed my hell through the long years.
Intensified my hell throughout the long years.

She seeks my secret; indeed, my secret lies here,
It seeks my secret; indeed, my secret is here,
in a sealed place whose mysteries cannot be reached.
In a sealed place whose secrets cannot be reached.
قالتit said بهذاthrough this الصمتِsilence ماwhat لمnot يقلhad been said
وقلتُand I said بالزفراتِwith the sighs ماwhat لاnot يُقالcan be said
With this silence she said what had never been said,
Through this silence it said what had not been said,
and with sighs I said what cannot be said.
And with sighs I said what cannot be said.
