Whether you return, or break your word and do not return,

I am your soul’s companion to eternity’s end.

    Thirst upon thirst upon thirst,

And watering places abound, yet I have come to none.

    Its waves, mad with foam.

And I saw the phantom of hardship outlined

In the unceasing fury of the storms.

A grave whose joys are beyond number,

    For a youth whose troubles are beyond number;

One whose day is a day without hope,

And tomorrow without solace—and the day after.

Between me and you by my soul and my hand,

I would have laid my side deep within its darkness,

And given my worn-out body rest within it.

O you who broke your promise, return to see

The stranger’s anguish and the loss of reason,

    أبدية حجرية الكبدِ

    And nights linked in sleeplessness,

    Eternal, stone-hearted;

And one worn out by journeys, whose illness

Is deadly, uncured in any land.

O poetry of my days and my song,

And the burning thirst of one with parched, thirsty lips,

O you who wrong me, how often your eyes have promised

My heart, when your lips made no promise.
