ما فيه من ريٍّ لظامئه
The sea—I question it, and it questions me.
It holds no quenching for one who thirsts for it.

كَذِب السَّراب على شواطئه
It is rebellious, unbridled; I am led astray
by the mirage's falsehood on its shores.

How often it roamed through my fancy and kept me awake—
a longing—yet where is desire's fulfillment?

And it journeyed with my dreams by night and hung them
above Suha, upon the meteors' gleams.

In my waking and in my drowsing,
a palace stands, joined to their summit.

لم يضربا للحبِّ ميعادا
And among love's wonders are two
who had set no rendezvous with love.

And two glances bewilder minds:
they read their book, but only just.

They walked; then, when love stopped, they stopped,
exchanging longing and passion.

Love knew something, but they did not:
who was that caller who cried out?

Who are you? Who am I? Who will tell us?
