You carried my life, as life swept us onward,

From honeyed dream to bitter reality.

So, O summit of my art, toward the summit of love,

Upon a white peak amid light and purity.

I knew you as one knows heaven; nothing

But the stars' whispers stirred within my breast.

And the slope's outlines grew hazy until I forgot them,

Until the slope, too, vanished from the realm of memory.

And among the lofty peaks I soared, circling,

And planted my nest upon their highest crags.

And nothing remained but you and the garden that

We planted and crowned with flowers in full bloom.

And nothing remained but you and the breeze that

Blows from Paradise with a musky fragrance.

And nothing remained but you and the skiff that

Swayed, gliding over the river's surface.

So, O summit of my glory, toward the summit of riches,

The riches of the soul after hardship, abasement, and poverty.

I would shield you from letting me lie cast away upon a rock,

When you were my shield in battling the rocks.

I would shield you—after the crown, the throne, and what

Sparkled with diamonds and gleamed with gold—

I would shield you from returning me to the dust's folly

And its baseness amid falsehoods and treachery.

I would shield you from forgetting; whoever comes to forget

His love—better his mind should be barren of thought.

If one day you recall your life, remember

A love and a time such as life never grants.

Oh, what a wondrous dream, and what a journey

That passed beyond the bounds of dream to the radiant stars!

And oh, what a strange day, and what a night

That pardoned and slept, heedless of the oppression of two captive souls.

And oh, what a hidden nook, and what a world

Hidden, rich in charms and magic!

And oh, what a far-reaching horizon, and what a birth

Anew for our two hearts; and oh, what a dawn!

I knew you as life is known—felt

And seen by one who was walking toward the grave.

I knew you as daylight is known to an eye

Stained with dreams, dark with terror.

It saw in you the spirit of dawn when it discerned

The whiteness of hopes in its red rays.

    تغلغل في الأرواحِ يَدمى ويستشري

    Within me is the wound—the universe's wound from before Adam;

It has sunk deep into souls, bleeding and spreading.

A generous hand tended it with kindness,

Sacred in its goodness, blessed in its secret.

And if I return alone after our journey together,

An outcast in the world, abased before time,

I shall return with my wound, its mouth agape and bleeding,

Nursing it in silence while no one knows.

Such is life: patience in it is sometimes like despair,

When hopes collapse, and despair is like patience.

I knew you as a prayer niche, in holiness and awe,

And you were the heart's prayer, in secret and aloud.

And my sole fetter was the fetter of your love,

I, a man who bowed to neither prohibition nor command.

And strangest of all in love is your fetter, which

I accepted as a twin to my free faith.

I grew weary of humankind's ways; all their dealings

Are the means of the needy and the striving of the desperate.

I grew weary of humankind's ways; among them there are no

Bonds not formed for some aim or affair.

If what they established and ordained is hatred,

Then that is the law of clay and degrading mire.

I rebelled, paying no heed to what they were used to,

And my soul fiercely rejects this law.

And suppose my dear, noble angel and guardian

Forsakes me—what excuse has loyalty, and what excuse have I?

I loved you, knowing no beginning to my love,

Nor end; enough for me to know that I love you.

If you choose estrangement, how wretched is the span

From light to the night that settles until Judgment Day.
