O you whose distance is cruel, how can you stay away?

I am a stranger in the land, alone.

If today fails me with you, I say, 'Tomorrow.'

And how far from me—and from meeting you—is tomorrow?

    تكاد فيها الظنون ترتعد

    Tomorrow is an abyss to whoever gazes into it;

    Within it, conjectures almost tremble.

I peer into its depths, questioning it:

Has eternity hidden its phantom within you?

O you who touch the wound, what have

Tender lips and a hand done to it?

A blaze fills my ribs, and its strangest wonder:

I find coolness in this very flame.

O you who left me where we used to sit,

And where my tuneful heart sang to you,

I gaze at the people in their crowds:

Have life's events made them miserable, or have they been happy?

Have they scattered, or gathered because of them?

And have they sunk down into the depths, or risen?

I am a stranger; come, O my solace,

For I have no one amid their throng.
